New strategies for cancer treatment

Until recently, the surgical removal of a malignant tumor, chemotherapy and radiotherapy were the only known weapon in the battle to cancer. Today for the treatment of cancer we hear words like bioscience, stem cells, nanotechnology .... But how many know about all this?Written by Dr. Paris Kosmidis Pathologist - Oncologist, a founding member of Greek Companies Oncology and principal investigator in several studies in Greece and abroad, is undoubtedly the right person to give us answers!

Today science has now more weapons at its disposal. Do you think that we are on track to defeat cancer?
I do not think that we have today only more weapons at our disposal to treat cancer. We have more selective drugs for treating certain cancers. Is organic drugs developed thanks to advances in molecular biology. It is certain that developments are rapid and several types of cancer are treated effectively. Certainly, however, much has to be done to say that we are close to completely defeat cancer.
Let's start with biological therapies. Can you explain what exactly is it?
These treatments using biological agents. These factors act either directly to specific elements of the cancer cell or to substances circulating in the blood to bind to the cancer cell and causing the uncontrolled proliferation of end or affect the immune system leading through modification suppressed the tumor development.
Biological therapies and targeted therapies are the same thing?
Most biological therapies are targeted. That target specific objectives and inhibit cancer development. It is somehow "smart drugs" because they target cancer cells while leaving unaffected normal cells of the body. Thus the treatment is done by a more targeted, and on the other less toxic. Generally the main advantage of biological therapies is twofold. First offer significant benefit to patients for their survival on the other hand is generally better tolerated and offer better quality of life.
Biological therapies appropriate for all patients with cancer;
Targeted therapies are "tailored" to a specific patient. Can two women with breast cancer or lung take quite different treatments.
And how do you decide who fits the biological treatment and to whom not?
When the histological examination then in many cancers proceed to identify the cancerous material. This means that we find the "fingerprint" which determine the uniqueness of the particular cancer. Based on these we select the appropriate biological treatment. All that we can achieve thanks to advances in molecular biology.
In the arsenal for the treatment of cancer are now able and stem cells derived from the patient or his relatives ...
Stem cells are an attractive scientific evolution their utility remains to be demonstrated in future. Their advantage is that their compatibility is absolute with the donor, and very close to his relatives. So immunological rejection phenomena where do stem cell transplantation is non-existent to minimal.
There are developments in the field of radiotherapy;
The radiation is an important component in the therapeutic treatment of cancer. These developments are important. Mainly in the field of technology that provides the possibility of only irradiation of the tumor with high light intensity without being affected by the surrounding healthy tissues.
The Nutrigenomics is another interesting science that can come with us to the issue of cancer prevention?
Nutrigenomics is the science that studies the way in which our body reacts to various therapeutic ingredients depending on the genetic background we have. In this way dietary advice to improve our health and prevent some diseases.
Lately it around the world made a news for cancer therapy of HIV. Also on the internet circulating like news on the virus of the common cold in the experimental stage. Do you think this is an important development?
Attempts in the art for several years aimed at the penetration of drugs into the cancer cells more effectively. Different viruses penetrate the cells. The combination antiviral medicines allow easier entry into the cells. With a few simple words viruses are used as "Trojan horse" that carries drugs. It is a method that is spearheading the research that needs much effort to implement without problems anthropo
